The state budget that Gov. Gavin Newsom signed includes $55 million for the DMV to build a data-sharing system to comply with the federal Real ID law.

In case people missed it in the article, the legislature only agreed to this with the following safeguards to limit what is shared: https://sbud.senate.ca.gov/system/files/2026-06/june-29-2026-hearing-agenda-senate-budget.pdf#page=44
