This is the death spiral
Yep, you got that right 👍 I started eating all the fish I can get, waiting for that spaceship to pick me up last minute… 😞
“There’s a lot of uncertainty on exactly where it’s coming from,” said David Lyon, senior methane scientist with the Environmental Defense Fund. “There’s a huge debate about this among scientists.”
Some methane emissions come from fossil fuel extraction. But, Lyon said, those emissions have remained consistent in the U.S., even as production of fossil fuels grew sharply, and don’t explain the recent increases. Predominant theories suggest large amounts of methane are being emitted by water-logged tropical wetlands due to changes in climate and land use. Livestock and landfills also release significant amounts of methane.
They kind of touch on this, but its not really debatable at all. Its coming from dying wetlands of all kinds. Tropical wetlands, temperate wetlands, peat bogs, etc. All of them are massive carbon and methane sinks. As those environments get disturbed, everything they have been holding onto since time immemorial is being released back into the system. Everyone thinks of forests as being the foremost important carbon sinks, but the reality is that these wetlands hold significantly more carbon and methane than forests of an equivalent size. Even if the trees were giant sequoias.
How they label this as “a debate” is ridiculous. Weve known this to be a scientific fact for well over a decade now
Also today, in obvious facts that don’t need mentioning…
