You can still check the alt text in clients for sighted people. Imo it’s idiomatic to only put alt text in the image field, no need to complicate stuff. If you want to see the alt text, use a client that supports it.
That assumes all clients people will use do, which sadly isn’t the case. So until all clients can see the alt text attached to a picture, we’ll continue doing both as we believe in accessibility for all.
As realistically a lot of people will not switch clients for one feature.
