Just a reminder, going from 6.x to 7.x does not mean there are more new features than usual. The numbering is totally arbitrary and Linus once joked about running out of fingers and toes to count

The bitter sarcasm of a veteran who saw this coming by virtue of having caused it?
a bit of this. Although in my defense, I wasnt working in advertising at the time (my company didnt even have an advertising division)
also, i dont work for one of the big tech companies that have their claws in your digital life. But i can see how it contributes at some level, however minor.

Getting out of the grasp of big tech.
Been self hosting for over 10 years before anyone coined the term enshittification. When i started, i could never imagine things getting THIS BAD with tech companies. I am happier and happier with my decision to self host things every day
I work in advertising

Some of the things in my house were set up so long ago, and running so smoothly, i havent looked at them in years (other than auto updates) now i’m afraid i’ve accidentally left some security hole without realizing it
For example, i set up cerbot 10 years ago and back then there was no DNS challenge, so i had to open my webserver to port 80 to renew… well since everything was running from https/443, i decided to block port 80
so i edited the systemctl unit for certbot to temporarily open port 80 for the renewal, and close it right after…
It was only 5 years later i realized i made a mistake and port 80 had been open for 5 years to the open internet
Probably no harm since its a public server anyway… defense in depth is the key

I enabled the Xe driver last night and got almost 50% improvement on vkmark score. Not sure if that benchmark translates into real life gaming. Will have to test more

Webrings ftw!!!

Unfortunately we have a whole generaton of entitled babies who scream “paywall!!!” every time somebody asks for compensation for their work

But my chromecast transports digital signal to my DAC. Probably better quality than the DAC in the bluetooth speaker

I think the problem is that a lot of people are just running flatpaks, dockers, and third party repos which might not be getting timely updates.
I try to stick to debian packages for everything as much as possible for this reason.

I’ve been using NC since single digit version numbers
The performance increase on v30 is VERY noticeable, especially loading photos.

Also, porn.
Where is this abhorrent content? I need to know so i can avoid it…
Docker doesnt replace your current system. It just runs containers (which act like a separate system)
You can also try podman which wont silently rewrite your firewall rules without telling you… I’ll never forgive docker for doing that

People share photos and videos all the time on mastodon. What is the difference with pixelfed?

Omg… I have the EXACT same goal. Qnap and make a better offsite backup process… Been procrastinating for years now
I’m thinking a diy NAS running openmediavault.
Currently doing encrypted backups to google storage archive tier. Very cheap to store, expensive to retrieve.
Thinking maybe i can set up a small box at a family members house for nightly backups

Geez, that still exists too??? Is sharebear still around? Limewire? Kazaa???

awesome! i’ll check this out!
sorry for the n00b question, but why do i need to self host a persistent daemon and then connect to it using a webUI? can’t i just use a soulseek client on my local machine? i’m not really familiar with the architecture of soulseek.

Cool!
Is there any good content on soulseek? The last time i downloaded music from that era, it was all 96kbps realplayer audio files totally mislabelled with the wrong artist

If buying isnt owning then piracy isnt stealing
i’ve always been a “organize everything at the file system level, and just play folders on demand in winamp” type guy… so when i couldn’t find a good winamp replacement after switching to linux, i ended up on quod libet and got used to organizing everything via tagging
quod libet was a bit overwhelming at first and forced me to fix a lot of broken tags, but totally worth it.
