  • Yeah, this would be good in my mind. I don’t even care if it’s just the communities my instance is federated with only; I would imagine I land with an instance that shares my values, so their federation I’d be OK with (hypothetically). I just don’t want to feel like I’m missing out by being somewhere else and not knowing/being aware of a portion of the community. I want the discussion just as much as I want the information presented.

Insanely well said. It seems like the goal with much of the discourse is just “my choice is right and everything else is wrong, and I’ll work backwards from there”. Not everyone uses social media the same way, not everyone has the same goals, not everyone wants the same features, not everyone values the same levels of privacy. And the running narrative with differing opinions on this seems to just be base-level tribalism. Just look at the insults here, lobbed solely because someone made an account with a social media platform that doesn’t align with your preferences.

  • I left Reddit because of the 3rd party app ban. The core ethos of the Fediverse was not what was appealing for me. It is a feature, to be sure, but it wasn’t why I came here. I just like the Reddit format, and aside from Reddit, I don’t know anywhere that aggregates content and discussion on the scale Reddit does (aside from this side of Fediverse now). If it wasn’t the 3rd party applications, I definitely would be jumping ship with the current censorship, so leaving was inevitable.

With Bluesky, I just do not care about it. If Bluesky didn’t exist, I wouldn’t have a Mastodon account. I only had a Twitter account because my brother and friend told me in college that if I didn’t make one, they would make one on my behalf to tweet about me and my daily stuff, lol. Bluesky could come out 3 hours from now and announce that it will donate all revenue to the GOP, and I’d just delete the account and be done with the format. It’s purely a protest account, and I landed on Bluesky instead of Mastodon in the moment. And because I don’t care about that format, I have no reason to want to migrate the account to Mastodon. And, if I somehow do come to care about that format in the future, I’d rather start completely over on Mastodon than have an old account with old stuff on it.

Idk why anyone argues it. I’m on it, but only because I want to support Not Twitter®. I’m there to just be user no. 1663987 who doesn’t want to be on Twitter. I post a stupid thought, some sports commentary, and scroll the feed for a minute or two. If it went away tomorrow, I’d have 0 negative effects on my life in even the most miniscule way.

Like…I like it there, and people seem to want an alternative to Twitter pretty bad, but idk if Bluesky is it. But I also don’t care to join Mastodon, as this kinda format isn’t something I care about or take seriously, and I’d rather get information here. If I get a Mastodon account in the future, though, I’d rather not have it tied directly back to my spite posting account lol

  • I wonder if you could do it like the aggregation apps that used to exist for like…FB, Twitter, Instagram, where you can access/post from multiple accounts. My big thing is I hate having a dozen apps that do the same thing; so having an aggregator app is nice. For people who want the singular account, you could see both Bsky and Mastodon. For people like yourself, you could log in to both accounts and have separate feeds, just homed on the same app. And I imagine it’d be nicer, because Activity Pub would be the base, and it could display different UIs based on what information is being pulled, so it isn’t just like a Twitter feed on FB. You could get the Lemmy view on Lemmy, Twitter view on Bsky/Mastodon, Instagram on PixelFed, etc.

  • I’m not a big Fediverse proponent, like…the concept is good, if not still a little young (activity pub isn’t ironed out across mediums and is still a bit jank in my opinion) but it seems a bit like a cash grab to be the savior dev making all the X-equivalent of Fediverse, and just hopefully something sticks. With PixelFed blowing up, feel like Loops is gonna take a back seat for quite a while.

  • The Loops app certainly feels like it. Not to diminish a solo dev doing something on his own, but it just seems like a standard video player with like, comment, follow. Search feature is only by user; when you type a comment, it doesn’t wrap the text, it just moves horizontally until you post it. I think the feed is literally just a chronological list of every video posted, and for some reason, most of the videos I see on it are just like…atmospheric videos. Still camera, nature background, rain in someone’s backyard. People love the concept, but I don’t see how it’s anywhere near ready to compete for users like other options are right now.

  • It’s cause no one on Reddit goes past r/hot on their sorts. If it isn’t found by people in New and given an initial boost, it dies there. Plenty of stuff has died with 3 up votes while a repost that has a bot farm behind it hits r/all every other week. Reddit now is a feed people scroll with no interaction; bots with an agenda and a select few users interact with stuff.
