Have a look at YUNOhost for your OS. It’s based on Debian and is designed to be really easy to set up and use, which might be useful for you as you have young children and not much time.

I’ve seen this being recommended for audio production but was put off disabling it because I didn’t understand what it was. I’d like the performance gain though.

I think Cherrytree is my most important app. It’s primarily for making hierarchical lists but you can hyperlink between nodes and to external files and URLs and you can insert files, images and tables. I pretty much use it for organising my entire life and archiving important files, links and documents. The database is a single file (which you can have encrypted), so it’s super portable and you can sync it between devices. You can easily theme it yourself too (the default theme/icons looks quite old school).

I also love GIMP 3.0

Make sure you get open-pollinated varieties, so that you can save your own seed. I have vegetables growing in my garden that are now 7/8 generations away from the original seed I bought. Saving your own seed means that the plants can adapt to your local conditions too and because you let them flower they also benefit other creatures in your garden.

Seed-saving is massively Solarpunk.

If you want to sync it across devices just use Syncthing or whatever file sync app you’re selfhosting.

I highly recommend it! Probably the most important application I have on my computer.

I installed Jitsi Meet on my YUNOhost server and am very impressed. It works really well and needed basically no setting up after installing.

Not sure whether it helps but after the last major update on YUNOhost it notified me of a few extra DNS entries I had to make. If I remember correctly it was under Domains, rather than Diagnosis.

YUNOhost is designed for this. You can do almost everything graphically via the webadmin. Mine has been running for a couple of years and I’m very happy with it. I have email, XMPP (both of which were installed out of the box), a website, file sharing and a few other things. There are a tonne of apps available, including Fediverse instances, Nextcloud. It’s a very cool thing to have available for making self-hosting more accessible.

Awesome, that’s very close to what I had in mind in terms of hardware.

I’d mostly like to host a lightweight website but perhaps also some communications stuff like xmpp and maybe even email.
