I see a lot of the same people, recognize the names. I argue with some, know I’ll agree with others. I like it. It harkens back to old forum days for me. Reddit may as well be anonymous1 talking to anonymous2, maybe outside of some more niche subs, but here, I can comment on a post about corn and recognize a few of the names who are also commenting.

Crazy, but it’s almost like parenting can make the environment safer!

Lemmy likes to portray Roblox the same way the 10pm news portrayed the Internet when I was in my preteens and teen years, like it was the wild west, everyone was a predator, etc. I let my kids hop on. Their friends include me, their mom (who has an account for some reason), each other, and the kids who live across the street. They like to play the platformers, and they invite me sometimes and we play them.

They’ll get older and they’ll go explore the internet the same way I did. I spent my adolescence and teen years eventually in AIM chat rooms, then forums, and thn Skyping random people, and somehow didn’t become a terrorist, didn’t get predated. I also am of the school of thought that you need to learn things on your own, rather than have no exposure to things that could potentially be bad.

So much same. I haven’t written many complete songs, soup to nuts, but I have dozens upon dozens of different tunes, from 8 bars out to a few minutes, and I know I’ve spent hours listening to them on repeat.

There’s just something really special about a song that kinda comes together on its own. Sometimes it felt like work, but sometimes the creative juices would flow and it was magical. Was similar with making mixes too, where I just felt which song should come next and didn’t put much thought into it.

Been a long while though, life is busy now. But it’s always there waiting for me to come back.

I agree with everything you said. Podcasts are shorter and so I don’t want to have 8 minutes left to finish later, because I just won’t. But I’m listening to 30-hour books, and I’m going to have a listen the way it’s meant to be listened to.

I also only read in bed, and I basically do a chapter a night, sometimes two if they’re short, and sometimes half of one of they’re long. I do try to find natural stopping points, I can’t stand being in the middle.

My wife got me into audiobooks. We’re both avid readers, and wanted to read when we couldn’t read. My wife, however, cranks her shit up to 2x to consume, consume, consume, and chastises me for listening at normal speed. I want to enjoy what I’m reading, bask in the world building.

That being said, why hate Plex? I’m sure, like me, you’re grandfathered in. Is it fucking new users? Sure. Sucks. Not everything is a battlefield, and they’ll eventually fuck me and then I will abandon them, it is what it is. But for now, the shit just always works with almost no tweaking from me. Yeah this is a big problem I see often. You have underground utilities? Tree planting becomes a huge thing. And in a lot of these walkable areas, places you’d want trees, folks tend to also prefer not to have the wires overhead with telephone poles everywhere, and so they’ve been backed into a corner.

I did just sit through a presentation by my local environmental commission where they addressed the issue. The solution seems to be trees bred for the specific environment: deciduous provides shade but doesn’t drop a lot of leaves; can grow tall but the root ball grows in a certain way so as not to interrupt sidewalks and utilities; hearty and resilient. I can’t recall the trees, but they were described as essentially not naturally occuring.

Did the same for our cat, minus the meal, because she couldn’t eat. She hated trips to the vet, and it was honestly easier on both of us not having to go somewhere, and getting to be at home. Will do it again for the next cat, unless he just disappears one day.
