Kind of the point of my comment was that drive size/cost is stagnating despite the massive technical progress in the space. I bought my first 4TB drive in 2020 ($89). Going back to 2015, I was buying 2TB at the same price ($86). Here in 2026, what’s the ~same price? 4TB ($99). 8TB is $180.

Namesilo used to be the standard for inexpensive domain registration. They keep raising their rates, however, and now they are expensive compared to the alternatives. Being a registrar takes next to no work. Do not accept expensive registrars. You can safely avoid Namesilo.

Also, you can “install” things like Discord into a webapp and when you launch it it looks and behaves just like regular old discord, but never makes you wait through those annoying installation screens.

I partially switched to Linux this week, I had an older Windows machine just laying around so I decided to install Linux (I went with Mint) sit it next to my regular Windows machine and set up a switch to easily switch between them. That way if I really need Windows, I still have it. I don’t think I will.

I’m still configuring the (now Linux) machine and getting everything like I like it, and all I keep wondering is why I didn’t try this sooner. There are so many cool things (like sftp right in the File Manager? right on). I have no complaints.

Steam has run every game I’ve tried with only minor tweaks (switching to recommended Proton versions for each game, basically). Gaming is not a problem on Linux anymore. I’ve run old games (Torchlight II, Portal 2, Skyrim) and new games (Oblivion Remastered, Baldur’s Gate) and the only problem has been my shit-ass video card just can’t run them basically (1050Ti, time to upgrade, lol).

A little while doing all this and I’ll convert the Windows machine to Linux and be rid of Windows altogether. Before the end of the year, hopefully. Everyone should give it a try.

I never used RIF but I came over at the same time due to the fuckery over mods. I quit all my mod positions that day too, no more working for Reddit for free.

So lemmy.ca and piefed.ca have different feeds altogether when I view them, are they two separate things then? I’m not really clear on how communicating freely between them works. I understand that’s how the Fediverse works, but I have a Mastodon account and I haven’t sorted out any way to post on/read lemmy content with it, so I’m not sure what the integration actually means in practical application? Maybe someone could help me out.
