I honestly can’t stand GNOME and I’ve given it several tries to try and either appreciate it or understand why others adore it. I don’t get it. Like ok I want to open an application launcher or simply see my dock. default click on those odd looking buttons that represent your workspaces but also is your launcher/dock view? ok…I just want to open firefox why do I have to see an overview of my workspaces? I don’t care about that I just want to open firefox. How come I can’t customize it easily? why do I need to download extensions via my web browser to do so? ok time to upgrade GNOME…wait why are ALL my extensions now broken? Let me go to the GNOME forums or discord to get help…wait why am I getting chewed out by the devs for wanting to customize my GNOME experience? ok I’m going back to KDE.
KDE has also improved A LOT in the past year. it’s a damn solid DE now. I primarily use Niri on my NixOS machine but I do have KDE installed also because every now and again I like going back to it to play around with and honestly…I’m starting to prefer Konsole over other terminals.

But you can do all this anyways, this isn’t new or ground breaking.
you can load up Claude Code an a completely empty directory and tell it to build something and it will do it. it’ll do it slowly and most of the time incorrectly but it’ll eventually build “something” that will sort of work. Unless i’m still waiting for my coffee to kick in and I’m missing something here - companies already do this. Hell a lot of my current clients currently do this. no code, nothing to base anything off, just tells Claude an idea for a project and to build it.

receive distress call from Hanako: “it can wait.”

I’m probably of the minority here but I really liked Jellico. yes he was stern, yes he was strict, but there was just something about him that I liked.

oh don’t get me wrong I absolutely love the refit and A. totally. I just don’t want to see them…again…on “new” stuff ala the Enterprise-G.
And you’re right about the ships post TNG. They went from “we love exploring” to “we gotta fight the dominion and the borg and our ships need to look the part” Just give me more of the curvy yet powerful looking designs from TNG again. And I mean sure it’s not like there were many in TNG, hell the Nebula was just a Galaxy with no neck and an upsidedown stardrive but god dammit I liked it.

absolutely beautiful! man I wish Star Trek would do designs like this again instead of “How can we redesign the Constitution Class for the umpteenth time?”

Codeberg I donate to once a month. If I find some repo or project/cli/tui or whatever that I enjoy using I’ll donate to their Ko-Fi.
Basically Codeberg is guaranteed and for anything else it’s whatever peaked my interest at that moment.

I recently slapped linux on an old (10 years or so) chromebook and you’re right. It’s a…process to say the least.
what’s it good for? not much. It flips around so you can use it as a tablet/touch screen but my god was that like almost a days worth of tinkering to get working correctly. if you flipped the screen over to make it a tablet the screen wouldn’t rotate correctly. lots of adjustments just to get it to work. Also you have to keep in mind the storage you have available. mine has all of 16gigs.
So what’s it good for? a glorified terminal station that can SSH into my server. I initially went with XFCE but after awhile I figured even THAT was overkill as all I was really using or could use was the terminal. So I slapped Cagebreak on it (honeslty could have just gone with Cage) and use it as a simple termnial station and a glorified jellyfin client via jftui.
Was it worth it? no, but it was more of a hobby project and nothing that I would ever consider as a daily driver at all. It’s just an old POS chrome book I can use while laying in bed to watch a movie or tv show from my server and mess around in the terminal.

not only was it just a clip show, it was a clip show that was the SEASON FINALE.

Not with any of the current models, none of them are concerned with security or scaling.

also in most cases it’s simply the default.
Look if you’ve spent any time whatsoever interacting with clients, customers, whatever when it comes to development work for literally whatever be it software or web or mobile applications at the end of the day they all want the same thing. They want it to just work. Right out of the box, to simply work. The majority of people DO NOT want to customize their PC or online experience, they don’t want to tinker, hell these days they don’t even want to download an exe off a site - if it’s not in some kind of app store, it ain’t getting installed. They all want a thing to just work.
Windows, like it or not, provides that. They don’t want to use Linux, they don’t want to potentially have to open a terminal and type out some simple commands. Most of these people have never even opened a cmd prompt or powershell in windows in like…ever. A good chunk of people using windows don’t even know terminals exist.
I use linux, I use different distros, and I don’t blame anyone who refuses to make the transition even though they aren’t exactly enjoying their windows experience. They deal with it. Let them complain. A lot of people simply don’t have the time or even the interest to learn a new piece of tech and again I don’t blame them.
Can Linux also “just work”? sure, it can potentially but lets not kid ourselves here and lets REALLY be honest with each other. It’s not going to “just work” like Windows, for the vast majority of people, does.

I installed arch to a VM yesterday for some stuff and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get Paru or Yay going and well…there ya have it. spent like an hour trying to figure out why they both weren’t working.

Depends on how the D is fitted. If they haven’t retrofitted or added any tech they’ve pillaged then it’ll be like the fight in Yesterdays Enterprise so maybe like 5 Klingon Birds of Prey would be able to take them out. IF the ship has been fitted with stuff they’ve stolen from the Romulans or other places then the Enterprise could be something like the one in future timeline of All Good Things where they could easily spank the Klingons and Romulans.
If they’re pillaging along the Neutral Zone than chances are they’ve now got a cloaking device. They’ve also probably added disrupters to the ship. Plus if they’re selling whatever they’re stealing to say like the Farangi or other races they would have likely gotten tech from all over the place.
So a standard Starfleet fitted Galaxy Class? not long, it’s still technically a science and exploration vessel. an upgraded Galaxy with tech from several different races? could potentially make it the most powerful ship in the Alpha and Beta quadrant.

My friends girlfriend had a Win 10 laptop that “technically” wasn’t supported to upgrade to 11 (It was) but she wasn’t keen on moving to 11 as she didn’t like the look of it (panel, etc).
So they both asked me for alternatives and I gave some options and we settled on Fedora KDE. She loves it. Especially when I showed her how she can really customize the look of it and for fun I showed her the Chicago95 stuff that someone did and she was like “wait, can I do that?”
She always loved the Windows XP look as that was essentially her childhood. So with a bit of work we got Plasma to look like Windows XP and she absolutely loves it. says it makes her feel like a kid again when she was really into pc tech stuff and now using linux has sparked that interest again. She’s now watching Veronica Explains and Bread videos on youtube about linux shes learned a few terminal commands, how to do DNF (which she loves) to download programs, etc.
And because of her watching Bread youtube videos she’s now asking me about switching to Arch. Her boyfriend is also making the switch too on his desktop. So I think next weekend I’m going to help them set up Arch or CachyOS on both their machines.
Honestly these are great but I’d just be happy if they fixed the widget discovery stuff for the panel/desktop.
honestly it’s better to just host your own private instance as if you want a lemmy and mastodon instance that others can also set up you not only have to admin it you also have to moderate it.
Also keep in mind it’s NOT just actual people signing up but you also have to deal with all the bots which WILL register en masse to your instances. a lot of people won’t mention this. bots flock to this stuff like flies on shit. It’s not worth it unless you plan on really dedicating the time to actively admin your instances.
I run Akkoma instead of Mastodon and Piefed instead of lemmy. both of which were easier to setup than mastodon/lemmy and less resource heavy.
