I think you’re right on the money. There seems to be a component of enticing power users to stick with Windows as well. The app is still “in beta” despite the first release being in 1996 (!). I had to look that up, because I’d only heard about it in the early windows 10 days.

Yeah, calculation of the amount of possible strings containing only a-f is trivial. But the idea is for addresses to be memorable. So I’m wondering how many strings which are valid IPv6 addresses are possible if you are limited to actual English (or, pick a language) 4-letter words containing only a-f. As someone mentioned, this could be expanded with 1337-speak.
But you’re limited to a-f. I wonder if anyone’s figured out how many addresses are actually possible with that system.
Very cool, thanks for your response!
For some reason I assumed this was already how the fediverse worked, but I haven’t been here very long and it does explain some things, including the “empty” vibe in some lesser-populated places.
This is super exciting for the fediverse and, naturally, I have questions. While this change will mostly bring positives and a better experience for users, there could also be more opportunities for shenanigans.
What considerations are being given to data integrity/mutability and trust? Will all servers that touch a post have a distributed record of all comments and give network confirmation (a la blockchain)? Or does one server (e.g. the originator of each post, or the server with the most resources) act as a single authority of that post? Something else?
Could one server be instructed to “go rogue” and submit bad content to the network, or go on a deletion/overwriting spree that ends up becoming permanent?
What about resources? What impact will backfilling have on your average dude hosting a small instance?
This is just where my mind goes, you see. I’m sure all this and more have been discussed and figured out already. If a public discussion is available to look at, I would love a link!
It makes me think of a machine, not a person. I prefer to just use “staff”
I’m glad to see someone who gets it. There are certain things on the path that will be tough to swallow. My fear is that not enough will learn this and we’ll just keep digging the hole. Holes at least have one silver lining, in that you eventually come out the other end. The question is how long that will take and how banged up we’ll get on the way there.
2025 Santa doesn’t even stop for the bad kids anymore, he just rolls coal at their house from the sleigh.
Same here. Once my iMac G3 and 2nd gen iPod Touch shit the bed, I was out. My parents are mac people and frequently ask me for help with random, outlandish issues on their Macs (since I’m a “computer person”) and I’m usually at a loss.
