  • My guess is they’re the late reddit accounts when reddit is already big and shit. They weren’t around when reddit was just “small digg”. Tbf I wasn’t there as well.

I was on reddit back when it was just small digg, you are 100% correct.

These are a bunch of modern social media brainrotted people, for lack of a better term, who just need to get all the upvotes, need to get as much digitally mediated social validation as possible.

    These people are the hivemind.

They want everything to be easy and convenient and accomdodate them, they’ll yap for hours about how something should work and never do a damn actual thing to achieve it beyond ‘spreading awareness’.

The fact that it took you a few attempts to figure out how to ‘do’ lemmy acts as a filter.

I’m not awake enough to be able to try and argue whether or not its… net better overall to have an easy, more difficult to censor and manipulate reddit alternative… or if allowing it to be easy to access just fundamentally does comprimise the system by way of the hivemind then eventually, inevitably taking over and becoming increasingly sycophantic and culty and sociopathic.

… but I can tell you that from a certain point of view, having to actually engage your brain a bit to join what is basically a network of web forums, well you can see see that as a feature, not a bug.

  • “OP discovers quaternions.”

How do you solve gimbal lock?

    3Vector Math / Matrix Algebra?

    Nonsense rotational transforms?

    You do nonsense harder.

    Imaginary 4th Dimension, harder.

Shut up, don’t think about it, yes it will work if you don’t think about it.

… I guess that makes it like, the opposite of Orc Wauuugh or whatever?

  • I think the technically more specific phrase to use here is ‘Bisexual Lighting’, which more specifically refers to scenes lit with a blue/purple and red/pink light, from roughly opposing angles.

Bread Tube is fairly notorious for significant use of ‘Bisexual Lighting’, blame Contrapoints, I think she either started or greatly popularized it first.

    https://www.thepinknews.com/2024/02/05/what-is-bisexual-lighting/

Evidently the term predates the term Bread Tube, I think?

    Anyway… … now that I uh… ahem, examine this scene more carefully…

Are you actually using two different colored lights/lamps?

    Or… a single, UV light/lamp?

I could be mistaken, but the way that light works on uh… exposed skin… reminds me of UV.

While (I think) I totally understand what you are saying here…

… Yeah I’m honestly fine with lemmy just being more or less a tiny cluster of neo forums.

    I like the cozy.

At the same time… from I guess a less selfish perspective… yeah, this is the exact time an alternative to Reddit and other corpo social media needs to be popularized.

But, somewhat alleviating myself from that… I don’t really know anybody that I could ‘word of mouth’ spread lemmy to, that I haven’t already.

And I’m too crippled to put stickers on really anything outside my own apartment, lol.

  • It makes much more sense if you read the last third or so of the post.

They convert their examples of algorithms optimizing for different or wrong things into direct social commentary on how social media algos optimize for rage, as this is more profitable than something that would optimize for… you know, improving society… many elements of modern tech driven society are optimizing for the wrong thing.

The entire set up of the post is ‘i am a computer scientist and my job is i sweep floors in a grocery store’.

That entire setup is a society nonsensically ‘optimizing’ what it does with workers of various skill sets.

This person did this because they are immensely bored and underutilized, they are underemployed.

IE, the labor market / education system is very badly optimized.

A better optimized society would have them writing a post with them describing a more consequential, practically useful code adventure.
