Linux kernel 6.18 brings expanded architecture support, BPF updates, new namespace file-handle features, and wide-ranging hardware enablement across CPUs, GPUs, and sensors.

Linus Torvalds has just announced the official release of the new Linux kernel 6.18.

“So I’ll have to admit that I’d have been happier with slightly less bugfixing noise in this last week of the release, but while there’s a few more fixes than I would hope for, there was nothing that made me feel like this needs more time to cook. So 6.18 is tagged and pushed out.”

I watched Linus on Linus tech tips. Never really saw him before aside from the fuck Nvidia clip.

    Seems like a respect guy!

There’s some controversy around him–he has a history of anger issues and it’s impacted his work. But his contributions to the open source community are practically unquantifiable.

Overall, I’m incredibly grateful for him and his work, but still hope that he continues to work on his personal issues and becomes his best self.

Fortunately, sounds like he is - a lot of the mediation issues from prior disputes are now prevented, at least from what I hear from my programmer friends.

I personally haven’t contributed to the kernel, but from my experience dealing with adjacent FOSS developers, things tend to be less flame war and more of a brief yap from two sides.

Is it really “anger issues” writing an angry email on your computer?

Go back a few decades and when men got upset, they would beat someone physically.

Linus himself sees his own behavior as problematic and has put significant work toward changing it. Call it whatever you want, I guess, but just because it doesn’t result in physical bruises doesn’t mean it’s not problematic.

Yep. But I think he is behaving pretty ok in every outburst. But anger issues, oh yes. But to me it’s more like “I hope he’s okay” rather than an unstable situation. He’s working on it. And he’s pretty serious it seems.
