It’s not even close to being that though. There are a couple episodes that point out and deal with issues related to being essentially college aged students, but other than those situations, and the fact it’s an Academy in general, very little of the show is teen drama.
Even when that aspect is more evident, it’s used as a lens for more general themes, like the PTSD

Which is something Star Trek hasn’t historically portrayed very well. More often it’s completely ignored past the episode unless we’re talking about the main cast.
Academy is as Star Trek as it comes if you don’t go into it with preconceived notions expecting something like a CW show.
Reminds me of the old days when people would tell me that Star Trek was just a soap opera in space like it was supposed to get a rise out of me. At most, you’re going to sell me on checking out soap operas.
