Sodium-ion batteries offer several major advantages over nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, particularly in terms of cost and proven safety against fire risks. They also maintain strong energy density even in extremely low temperatures.
Additional data from the market tracker showed that the combined global market share of the three Korean battery firms mentioned is in sharp decline. Their combined share in the first half of this year fell to 16.4 percent, down 5.4 percentage points from a year earlier. In 2021, they accounted for more than 30 percent of the global EV battery market.
In contrast, Chinese battery firms held a commanding 77.8 percent share of the market during the same period
more carmakers, including Hyundai Motor, are moving to adopt Chinese NCM batteries
I thought the promise for sodium batteries was they were cheap as hell and could be used for more reasonably priced stationary applications - basically making whole home batteries feasible.
Yeah no idea why there’s a car. These are the ones I’m waiting on for our propery.
Correct.
Well then fuckin sign me up! I was quoted costs for the battery system that were double the price of the 8kW solar system I was going to put on my rooftop.
And not degrading (as much) over time.
They are. For vehicle use they’d only be worth a damn in small shorter range vehicles. Trying to shove one in a longer range or large vehicle would need the battery to take up lots of space and a large amount of weight, making it hell on tire tread life, and when a set of tires is $800 you’re going to fuck yourself over (and the environment) when you have to buy a new set every 25,000 miles.
Sodium chemistry works better at lower temperatures, the lithium problem YouTube car reviewers are not allowed to talk about.
That’s ridiculous. You can’t even fit a tyre there! /j
Sodium Ion??? Shit, bust out the saltines, Jerry, we’re going into the battery business!
Looking at the demo chassis that vehicle is not going anywhere fast. Or maybe you’re not supposed to install tires on it because it rides on rails?
