It establishes trust. It can help differentiate people if you arent great with names. It can show them you care about the meeting. It can reinforce accountability when you know you will be updating someone face to face.

I understand the stance that these things seem superficial but i think thay can be true or false depending on who you are working with, the industry you are working in, and your position.

To be clear, I think it would awesome to not have these things be a factor.

If your boss doesn’t trust you to do your job and be accountable unless they see your face, they might be bad at their job (which is organising workflow in a way that facilitates high productivity of their employees). And if they don’t trust you to care, they’re not paying you enough.

I understand that people can’t always change their job immediately, but these micromanagement issues can be red flags towards bigger issues with your workplace. Perhaps you should consider joining a union or another similar organization that protects worker rights.

My boss frankly trusts me too much and doesnt care if cameras are on or not. Its not that weird that people have different ways of dealing with telecommute. I personally want to wfh all the time but some time in office has helped me get better at my job. Even like overhearing how people handle stuff exposes me to situations i havent seen yet. But whatever i realize im going against a lemmy trope.
