Honestly, I think part of it was that it was a scene by the 2 weakest actors in the show. The words didn’t help, sure, but nothing was delivered in a believable way either.
Hmm, that might also be true, yes - with extra demotivating effects of the hastily (or restricted) script/dialog they had to perform.
Between the overly classically thespianed captain (even in some unfitting situations), miss ‘I telepathically feel you are feeling the emotion you are so excessively showing’, and I’m-gonna-perch-my-number-one-leg-to-look-very-cool I might have not actually noticed that fact, rather accept it as a bit of a correction to balance the usual dialog over-acting with some under-acting.
(I didn’t blame the actors for nothing mentioned, always thought the showrunners wanted it exactly that way, like a style choice that they stuck with all the time)
