Was on vacation last week. Did people read my OoO message and forward their requests to anyone else on my team? Lol, of course not. So I spent all yesterday and today taking care of things that should have been handled last week, plus catching up on a week of everything, plus two of my team took days off this week so I’m picking up their slack.
This is my attitude. I’m not going to slack off when work is light, and I’m not going to work overtime because someone else can’t do their job. I’m also lying about not slacking off. Work sucks.
I used to work in a country with workers rights, and vacation time could be taken as one go of 30 days, or two of 15/15 or 10/20. It’s rather inflexible, but does work great in setting expectations for all involved. And your employer can’t force you to only take small vacations.

It should still take the same amount of time when you get back. If they don’t like the response time, that’s on them.
